About the Shop

It's a tale as old as time.

Girl meets fabric.
Girl buys fabric.
Girl buys way more fabric than she will ever use.

After more than a decade of sewing my own vintage-inspired clothing and costumes, I realized that my passion for collecting fabric was rapidly outpacing my passion for actually using it. That's why – in 2017 – I opened my shop over on Instagram at @shopmakethislook.

My goals for that small shop were simple: Dip my toes in retail. Sell the stuff that I love to those who will love it too. Be honest with my customers. Admit mistakes. Learn a lot through research. Make educated guesses and don't be afraid to say "I don't know." Source the best fabric and give old things new life. Inspire. Like literally – with a little Photoshop and a lot of ideas. And, of course, sometimes keep the really good stuff for myself.

While the shop may be bigger, my goals remain the same and I look forward to providing a fantastic shopping experience for my existing community of customers, as well as those new to Make This Look!

About The Owner, Mena Lazar

Somewhere in the gulf between my childhood aspiration to be an archaeologist and my middle-aged adulthood reality of being a stay-at-home parent, lies my  current occupation of vintage shop owner – specifically seller of vintage and antique fabric, notions, and sewing ephemera.

Though it was a circuitous journey to reach this point in my life, I engage in a sufficient amount of treasure hunting to make childhood Mena proud.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband and three children. Although I don't sew much these days, my vintage projects can be found at @makethislook and my historical costuming  projects can be found at @makethishistoricallook
