I received an email today from the Milo Foundation about how they will soon be closing their Berkeley adoption store.
After much reflection, The MILO Foundation has made a decision to close our store here on Solano Avenue, and to sell this building. It has become clear - with all of the complications of the zoning and permit process in Berkeley and with the opposition from some neighbors - that continuing here is taking too many resources and drawing our efforts away from MILO's important animal rescue mission. The decision is ours – no one else's. This is a move not an ending.
From the entire letter posted on the site, it's clear that it was a complicated situation having the store in retail zone near neighbors and that it wasn't purely complaining residents that contributed to the decision -- the Milo Foundation itself takes some of the responsibility. Still, it would have been nice to see more community support for a group doing such good things for animals.
The Milo Foundation is where we got our precious little Maddy. If it wasn't for their work and dedication to these little guys, she wouldn't be sitting on my chair right now with me. We're incredibly grateful for the work they've done and for having a local place to go and adopt animals.
But Milo continues on and they certainly aren't closing. So, be sure to check out their site and see how you can help.

[this is good] Thanks for mentioning and bringing attention to the Milo Foundation; am so thankful for organizations like this which are dedicated to helping animals.

I can't believe neighbours would complain about an animal sanctuary.

That's so sad... I'm sorry to hear about the closing of that location. You're right though. At least the program is still going on strong.
My mom found and raised over 200 cats before she was 30, and I've also tried to help her rescue as many animals as possible over the years. We firmly support programs like this, so it's wonderful hearing about organizations that I didn't previously know. Thanks for posting this, Mena.

[this is good] No matter where they end up, they've fostered goodwill in a lot of people about animals. For whatever reason tonight my wife decided to feed our cat (who we got at the SPCA on Potrero now many years ago) some silly snookums snacks. In the middle of Little Miss Sunshine, right at the part where they're escaping from the hospital with the grandfather in the trunk, she decided to heave it up. No worries. Happens now and then (e.g. long haired calico). But that little bit of sunshine made us laugh so hard, for all the wrong reasons, I was reminded how dear it is that we - wife, kid, cat, me - are a family.
Go out, whereever you may, and find some Milo somewhere. Support good people doing good work.

I think Maddy was the clear winner. Shelby will have to go into training so she can keep up.
