While Ben is the greater David Foster Wallace fan at our house (I judge that by who finished and who did not finish Infinite Jest1.), I still had to post a memorable quote on the sad occasion of his death.
The quote2. comes from an interview with Gus Van Sant in Dazed and Confused magazine from May 1998.
GVS: (Pause) I thought that after we talk together I would type this up and then send it to you to approve it. Give you a...do you have a computer?
DFW: Uh...yeah. (loud unexplained bang) But I don't have anything that, like...I make my own disks and stuff...
1. I will one day read all of Infinite Jest. I'm discouraged by the fact that it took Ben all of summer 1996 -- between our freshman and sophomore years in college. And that was during summer vacation! We don't have time like that anymore.
2. This certainly wasn't the most brilliant quote or writing he contributed to the world, by any means. However, this claim that he "make [his] own disks" has stayed with me ever since we read this article ten years ago. Such a quirky statement that probably only made sense in his world. If you haven't read any David Foster Wallace, start with A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again. Especially so, if you have any interest in David Lynch and cruise ships.
