anildash: so that's who you stole your layout from?
mena: ha ha. she stole my source too.
mena: Motherfucking Beatrix Potter lover.
anildash: I'll give you a $100 if you post that.
mena: Make it this fondue pot and we have a deal.
anildash: you camgirl ho.

Well you're template is relatively simplistic and boring anyway. What the hell are you whining about. A two year old could have made this template. Try being flattered rather than pissed off that someone would actually WANT this vanilla design.....sheesh.

This coming from someone who can't even post a real link but CAN'T do it three times in a row. Dooood, settle down. Be nice, or don't come 'round.
The internet is filled with weenies, go find some of them to bash. Jeesh.

Thank you for the explanation. That makes more sense now.

There's a fine line between "borrowing" and "stealing" an idea. And, if you ask 10 people what that is, I'm sure you'd get 10 different answers.
I used to teach art and computer graphics. One of the first things I mentioned to my beginning students was that they needed to know the rules before they broke them (by breaking them I mean to push and pull at an idea -- to make it your own).
Gretchen appears to be young and inexperienced. Good web page design requires both some code knowledge and some graphic design knowledge. I can see "learning" in this way -- initially. As a teacher I would often see work that closely resembled already published work. But, in that situation, the "ripoff" usually didn't leave the classroom. On the net, everyone can see it.
Fred, some of the best designs are simple. In fact, simplicity often allows the content to shine (as it does here). Don't underestimate the amount of work and expertise that went into Mena's design.
Back to my original point about there being a fine line. IMHO, Gretchen has crossed that line. Her site is too derivitative of Mena's. Should her head be cut off for it? I don't think so. Perhaps reading this discussion would help her understand that she needs to make her designs more of her own; and that while appropriating another's design might seem like flattery to her, that's not the issue.

Sorry for the trouble, and thank you for the added info. It makes more sense now (or I'm just slow).

Jeff, I believe you mean Deb, not Gretchen. Greatchen just posted about it :)

Motherfucking Mena Trott lovers.

Oops, sorry Gretchen. I think version 3 of MT should incorporate a script that lists the cast of characters in any long list of comments! -grin

I agree with Jeff about the simplicity of this design. It works beautifully and is very difficult to get right. I'm tempted to copy it myself ;)

your layout is amazingly beautiful and simple, and i would feel flattered that this newbie copied it... but...although, i am tempted to copy it, cause i love the design so much...i won't b/c i know it's copying. or i would take pieces of it, (and let you know first) but not MOST as this girl has done.
i kinda knew that copying was bad when i was 13 i think, so i don't know if age is the reason for it...but more of a lack of creativity and imagination.
anyway, yours is still better, for so many reasons... (and i also don't understand the green stripe at the bottom (phish, it does scare me as well!).

It's all right, Jeff, I'll forgive ya this once. ONCE!
(Very good suggestion, by the way, for the MT cast of characters "feature." Mena, I'm sure you and Ben can cook up something along those lines, no?) :) Drama can sure get complicated. And since blogs seem to be so rife with drama, we need some assistance in that realm!
I'd better watch it, eh? Don't want to sound too much like a MoFo MeTroLo... (thanks, Anil, I couldn't resist!)

I agree with Jeff. Who cares if she imitates the design, just so long as she doesn't post it on the internet, right? The only thing she did wrong was making it publicly viewable. If she kept it for herself to learn from, that would've been harmless. And why is it still up? With me, when I was younger, I would always try to replicate someone's site. It proved for a good learning experience, but never in my life did I post it. Does she even know what she's doing?
I'm sure this all isn't going to matter, but she should be confronted with what exactly it is she's doing. She should apologize (not publicly), and move on, and make this a learning experience. If she has talent enough to copy a site with such intricate code, she should be able to make something all her own, even if it is simple.

With all due respect to the one who was bashing on the fleur-de-lis spacers: Those are common. They are available as symbols in the wingding font. Bash away if you must (rather than teach or help), but stick to stuff that's bashable.
