If you've read my first dollarshort.org post ever, then you'll understand that I'm not used to being awarded compliments and nominations.
In fact, being the only person in my entire class who didn't receive a single award at our high school awards ceremony sort of sealed my fate as being the classic loser.
For what it's worth, I was robbed - I should have received a certificate mentioning that I was my school's team captain at the Knowledge Bowl.
But nothing. And, frankly, I carried that team.
No, I'm not still bitter. Not much, at least.
My mom called me yesterday and we had a very cute conversation about some other award I'm nominated for:
Mom: That [site name] isn't playing fair! They're asking for votes for the People's Choice Awards!
Mena: I know -- what are you going to do about it?
Mom: It's just not fair. But I've told my friends (she lists them) to vote for you everyday.
Mena: Well, I'm certainly not going to beg for votes so don't be disappointed when your baby doesn't win.
Mom: Well, you deserve it -- your're the best.
Oh, a mother's love.
I wasn't going to mention my nominations at the Bloggies because I have issues about tooting my own horn.
But then I realized, unlike the other award I'm nominated for -- my readers actually took the time to nominate me. And, if I didn't mention the Bloggies, I would seem a bit of an ingrate.
So, of course, I have to say thank you.
I really love the fact that people like dollarshort.org.
And even though I am nominated, I still believe that unless everyone has a fair chance of being noticed and "judged," awards and contests still are a bit of a pain.
And, I'll say it again Brushstroke.tv, Dooce and Boing Boing (should have been nominated for weblog of the year, in my opinion) were robbed. Oh, and vote for Fury for Best Programming for a Weblog (which should really be, in my opinion, home-grown solutions).

I just noticed that you've put an Oh Brother Where Art Thou? quote on your title image. Imagine my surprised outburst of laughter.
I voted for you! You need to win! *crosses fingers* Go MENA!

Thanks for noticing :)
I was saying that line for like two days straight after seeing Oh Brother! for like the 15th time this month (It's always on cable).
Ben didn't even notice it until I pointed it out.

LOL! I know, it's so hillarious when he goes off saying that! I feel like a little kid, you know how they repeat lines off of television constantly while they're watching it, because my entire family and I sit there repeating that line. It's so funny.
Poor Ben, he's not into obscure details, kind of like me. *grins*

She omits mention of her SXSW nomination. If I mention it, it's not tooting your own horn. ;)

Geez Anil, why did you have to ruin my secret :)
I seem a bit weird for not publicizing this -- I should realize that there is a fine line between being self-absorbed and being annoyingly "humble."
You can't be humble and think you're humble at the same time. But for lack of a better word, that's what I'll use.
Self-conscious? Maybe that's it.
Well, I think I would like to win something -- I'm not against it. I'm not that weird.
So everyone go and vote for me for everything! Litter the streets with my URL. Tell the world that I'm the best.
Or, just vote for what you like and keep reading me.

It could be worse. You could be perplexed entirely about your nomination altogether.

When high school senior "awards" were announced, I looked at the categories and the only one I could possible get was "Most Pessimistic."
So I began my campaign by telling everyone I was sure I wasn't going to get it!"
My crafty plan worked!!
A few months back a co-worker told me he thought I was an optimist! Shows how far you can rise above your predestined disposition.

You deserve it - I know that can be hard to accept, but it's true:)

I will be truly honored when I lose to you, just having been in your company for a few short moments. Congrats on all the nods -- you've EARNED them! :-)
