Announcing yet another chance to relive your childhood!
Yes, it's coloring contest time again. If you're so willing, that is.
"Didn't you just have a coloring contest?"
Yes, I did. Thanks for noting that. But being that I just went to the dentist to have two fillings removed and painfully re-filled, I'm thinking that I need the distraction.
Besides, coloring is way more fun than self-pity -- and I've made a secret pact with myself to lighten the mood of dollarshort.org. Those last couple of posts were particularly down-beat.
So, the rules:
There will be a nice prize (prizes, perhaps) and, of course, the usual spoils of entering a coloring contest.
You know, blatant adoration, groupies, liquor and fame.
I'm going to give you three weeks (the actual date to be announced) and I'm probably going to have voting this time around.
A coloring tip: Multiple layers and "multiply" mode is your friend.
And now, here's your challenge -- it's a tough one.
When you're finished coloring, send your entry (in .jpg form) here.
Have fun!

waht do you recommend someone uses to color that in? i just used microsoft paint (ew), and it took me a ling time to do the hair.

That must have been a real pain. I use photoshop, but I think any program that has "layer" options would work. The trick is to be able to color "under" the lines -- that way you don't have to worry about the white areas showing through.

Thank you for this! I needed a good dose of cheer (and a non-blog diversion), what with Being Displaced By Excite@Home, and all.
:-)

Cripes! That's a hard one!
*feels intimidated*
Paint huh? Man I know what that's like... Paint doesn't get enough credit, it's really pretty cool. *g*

Jennie -- I feel your pain. We woke up Saturday morning without our @home connection. I almost went mad on the 56k dialup that Ben and I were sharing.
Luckily, it returned this morning after a switch at AT&T. Hopefully, you'll have the same luck.

Is this contest too hard? Should I pick another picture. It is doable -- I was able to color it in, but it's tricky.
Posted by: Mena | December 03, 2001 at 07:54 PM
Yeah, it is challenging, especially for the non-expert Photoshop users [raises hand]. But I actually learned a bit last night while working on it. It was fun, in a masochistic way :-)
Posted by: Jennie | December 04, 2001 at 07:57 AM
It's not too hard, it's a challenge! It wouldn't be a contest without a challenge, right? Besides, we've got three weeks to print out the picture on acetate, project it on a wall-sized canvas, trace it, painstakingly render the image in egg tempera, photograph the result, scan the photo, and submit the completed work. Easy!

Oooh, is that a Will Bradley cover?
Posted by: linda | December 04, 2001 at 09:58 AM
Very close! It's Eugene Grasset, whose work looks incredibly similar to Bradley's -- or vice versa. It's the 1892 Christmas Issue of Harper's.
I actually have a number of Bradley's works in this coloring book. It's Turn of the Century Poster Designs.

I just came across your site today - I love the coloring contest idea! Fun!
Posted by: lisa | December 04, 2001 at 11:29 AM
Do you call this a colouring contest or rather searching for your soul?
Posted by: Kiffin | December 04, 2001 at 11:47 PM
Who won the first contest anyway? There doesn't seem to be any mention of it on the page.
Posted by: Ryan Schroeder | December 05, 2001 at 07:27 AM
I mentioned it in this entry.
I need to make this more visible.
Posted by: Mena | December 05, 2001 at 09:15 AM
I'm almost finished, so I really hope you don't decide to change your mind about the picture! I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed colouring this picture...I've exeeded my own expectations.
Um...how do you want us to send you the finished product? gif? jpg? other?
Posted by: lisel | December 06, 2001 at 09:53 AM
Lisel: Yes, I'm keeping this as the picture. Don't worry :)

How many entries each are we allowed to enter?
This is a GREAT picture!

Like Chad, I'm wondering when we'll get to see all these beauties and the one crowned loveliest.
Coloring contests rule!
Posted by: emily | December 28, 2001 at 09:02 AM
I was originally going to end the contest this last week, but everyone seems to be out of town.
So, lets say the end is January 3. We'll have some informal voting and I'll post all the entries.
If you haven't entered, enter -- I haven't received that many so your chances are pretty good.
