After the events of September 11th, I didn't think I could ever blog one of my childhood stories again. They were all too silly. I kept on thinking: Big deal, kids picked on me. So what?
There was one story, however, that I kept thinking about.
It's not heart-wrenching or tragic. It's just a little tale about me finding myself at the tender age of eight.
Have you ever had a moment like this?

I remember years ago my dad rented a small sailing boat (Hobie Cat or something along those lines) for an afternoon, and ignored the instructions to "stay within this bay". His reward was being shipwrecked against a shore covered in sea urchins. It soon became obvious that no serious damage had been done, but it was the first time I realised that things I took for granted like "I have 2 parents" would not necessarily always be that way. That's the sort of thing kids are meant to realise slowly, so it was actually quite hard to deal with at first.

I think it's incredible you remember a moment strongly like that. Thank you for sharing.

There's an error in your comic. The best pizza in Southern California (esp. San Fernando Valley) was at the Pizza Cookery, not Numero Uno. Sawdust on the floor, video games up front, sassy waitresses...'nuff said.

Eric, Even though I went to the Pizza Cookery a lot as a child, I can't remember how the pizza tasted. So, you may be right :) Our pizza cookery was right by Toys R Us so you'd think I'd have good associations with it.
